Corn hybrid combination has two breeding objectives: ① introducing and utilizing high-quality protein corn (QPM) from abroad, cultivating new varieties of silage corn with high quality and protein content; ② utilizing excellent and characteristic maize germplasm resources from abroad, Breeding and preparation of dwarf, dense, high yield, and high-quality maize hybrids. Sanya Point in Hainan Province mainly conducts the addition and breeding of excellent varieties to accelerate the breeding process. Our company has always been engaged in research on wheat and corn breeding. We have led the key international cooperation projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China, including the "Exchange, Exploration, and Innovation of Agricultural Germplasm Resources in Central and Southern China", the "948 Project of the Ministry of Agriculture on the Exploration and Utilization of Favorable Hidden Genes in Wheat", the "948 Project of the Ministry of Agriculture on the Collection and Innovative Utilization of Corn Germplasm Resources", and the "948 Project of the Ministry of Agriculture on the Collection and Utilization of Excellent and Characteristic Crop Germplasm Resources Abroad", A large number of wheat and maize germplasm resources (over 3200 copies) have been collected from abroad, including national projects such as the "Eleventh Five Year Plan" and the "Twelfth Five Year Plan", as well as sub projects such as the "Collection and Utilization of Excellent and Characteristic Crop Germplasm Resources in Africa". This has laid a solid foundation for enriching new wheat and maize germplasm materials, leveraging the advantages of distant hybridization, and achieving the creation of new excellent maize breeding materials. Our company has also selected 38 excellent materials with short stems (0.6 meters in height), compact cutting plant types, and disease and insect resistance from a large number of domestic and foreign maize germplasm resources. Twelve hybrid combinations (below 1.6 meters) were cultivated and planted in Shijiazhuang, Hebei, Mianyang, Sichuan, Zhangye, Gansu and Hainan in 2016-2017 under the density of 6000 plants/mu to 7500 plants/mu, showing extremely strong heterosis, which was affirmed by Zhao Jiuran, the chief maize expert of the Ministry of Agriculture of China. However, the scarcity of maize germplasm resources is a bottleneck that hinders the progress of maize breeding in China.
